Devastating forest fires hit Portugal

Thousands of firefighters, from Portugal and Spain, have been battling devastating forest fires in the central region of Portugal for the last three days. These fires have so far killed 64 people and destroyed many more homes.
These forest fires happen every year in Portugal and a big part of why they do are the huge areas of land which have seen native, more fire resistant trees, ripped out and replaced by non-native eucalyptus trees which are farmed for the paper (pulp) industry. These grow fast and tall, but they also contain an oily substance which catches fires very quickly.
A chance in policy has been on the table for years, but its not moving forward. Maybe this tragedy will set some wheels in motion.
